Welcome & Navigation
![]()
The Ipswich air cadets are based in their own building within the TA Centre compound on Yarmouth Road. The staff are all very much young-at-heart and are highly motivated to delivering exciting opportunities to 13-20 year olds, male or female, in a whole range of activities from flying to adventure training and power boating.
Ipswich Air Training Corps hold Parade nights twice a week – Mondays, where Squadron Cadets typically progress through the ATC training syllabus and practice drill and Wednesday nights that are devoted to Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme activities, sports, adventure training such as indoor rock climbing and staff-led projects such as electronics, communications, first aid and media. Both Parade nights run from 1900hrs to 2130 hrs (7pm – 9.30pm for those unaccustomed to the military way of telling the time!)
As well as parade nights, Ipswich air training corps has many annual camps including trips to Wales, Dorset and even exchanges to some countries further afield. These enable Ipswich air cadets to improve their adventure training skills – learning important things like navigation – that is if you don’t want to get lost!
There are both gliding and flying courses available with scholarships for both. There are many opportunities for rifle shooting at Ipswich cadets at either indoor or outdoor ranges. The squadron also has many sports available including rugby, football, swimming, hockey and netball.
After learning the basics of drill, cadets are given their uniform (blues on a Monday, camouflage on a Wednesday) and enrolled. After this cadets have to pay subs (£35 every three months) but this all goes to the ATC.
Whether staying as a cadet or moving up the ranks and becoming staff, being a member of 188 (Ipswich) Squadron is one opportunity you don’t want to miss.
