Basic Navigation Course

The second basic navigation course of the year in support of the adventure training plan was held over the weekend 25 – 26 June. Cadets studied the theory of map reading, scales, grid references and bearings in the classroom on Saturday before putting it all into practice around Rendlesham Forest the following day. After several goes at leading the team from checkpoint to checkpoint and dealing with misdirection each cadet developed an understanding of navigating by map and compass. The cadets are now eligible to undertake the advanced course in the Brecon Beacons in July that will reinforce the lessons learnt and introduce a few more.

Well done to cadets Conn, Harker, Barham, Tipping and Button.

Alexandra Rose Day

Once again, cadets were out in support of charity collecting in Ipswich town centre on the 18th June. This day we supported the Alexandra Rose Day. This particular charity helps other people-caring charities and community groups in the UK, helping them raise their own funds. Alexandra Rose Day was founded in 1912 by Queen Alexandra, as a practical way of marking the fiftieth anniversary of her first arrival in the UK from Denmark. The very first Rose Day, on 26th June 1912, stated that “Ten thousand ladies will sell wild roses in London today in honour of Queen Alexandra and for the benefit of the hospitals and charitable institutions in which her Majesty is interested.”

Flight Sergeant Treece, Sergeant Goodchild and cadets Barham, Marshall, Keeble, Martin, Fenton and Reynolds were around the town selling rose pins and collecting in the hot weather until 1pm.

Jimmy’s Farm

Saturday 4th June saw Ipswich air cadets helping with car parking duties at Jimmy’s Farm as part of a monthly farmer’s market. Situated at Wherstead, just outside Ipswich you may have heard of this farm from the documentary shown on BBC 2 last year as Jimmy Doherty, friend of famous chef Jamie Oliver, attempts to establish a pig farm and to produce the highest quality pork, sausages and bacon from his herd of rare breed British pigs.

Armed with radios and fluorescent jackets the eight cadets done a sterling job directing cars and were invited to help out again next month. If they survive the editor’s cut expect to see them in the second series that was being filmed on the day. We have some exciting pictures of the car park in the gallery, but alas no rare-breed pigs… this will be corrected next time!

It’s a blatant plug perhaps but the Adventure Training Officer is in raptures over the quality of the rump steak and “ghurka” sausages available from the Farm Shop…

Operation Diamond Flight

Three Ipswich air cadets had the chance to soar through the skies in a Vigilant glider – a small aircraft with a large wing span and small engine. The event was organised by 612 Volunteer Gliding School which operates from Abingdon in Oxfordshire, as part of Operation Diamond Flight to commemorate its 60th anniversary. The flight saw three first-generation Vigilants flown to the different airfields where 612 Volunteer Gliding School has been based.

Corporal Pugh and Cadets Harker and Marshall took part in the event by taking off from Wattisham airfield just outside Ipswich.

Corporal Pugh:

“It was great fun. We’d all been flying and gliding before, but not in a Vigilant. We went up to the Orwell Bridge and flew over the River Orwell. We also saw a C-130 Hercules and an Apache helicopter.”

The event took place on Wednesday, 1st June.

Suffolk Show

Ipswich air cadets attended the Suffolk Show on the 1st and 2nd June in aid of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association. SSAFA is a national welfare charity that helps current and ex-servicemen, women and their families when in need. The cadets sold draw tickets to the public on both days of the show with a good reception and a surprisingly large amount of tickets sold.

Cadets in attendance included Sergeant Treece, Corporal Woodgate and cadets Barham, Tipping and Keeble on Wednesday and cadets Marshall and Conn helping the NCOs and Keeble on Thursday.
