On Saturday 17 September, Cadet Sergeant Goodchild, and Cadet Reynolds, accompanied by WO Chisnall and the Squadron Chairman traveled to Hamble in Hampshire to join a once in a lifetime experience.
At the invitation of Flight Sergeant Kim Mason of the RAF Sailing Association’s Safety Section, the Squadron Boat, a 17-foot dory named “Regardless” was towed to the RAF Yacht Club at Hamble and launched to take part in a photo shoot involving the yacht “Red Arrow” and the RAF Aerobatic Display Team, The Red Arrows.
At about 07.45, “Regardless” in company with Flight Sergeant Mason in the RAFSA Rescue boat, left Hamble carrying two RAF photographers from RAF Marham. The crews traveled down the River Hamble and out into Southampton Water before proceeding westward through the Solent to rendezvous with “Red Arrow” about a mile south of the Needles.
The two boats spent about an hour performing working up exercises and allowing the photographers to take background pictures before the crew of “Red Arrow” very kindly provided tea and bacon rolls for everyone. Prior to the arrival of the Red Arrows all three boats moved to a predetermined position and “Red Arrow” set a constant course of 150 degrees.
Precisely on time, the Red Arrows arrived from the west and over flew the formation before beginning a series of passes at various angles, altitudes and in a selection of formations for the photographers with the two solo aircraft providing excitement for everyone in a series of low level passes.
Once the Red Arrows had departed, the crews said their farewells to “Red Arrow” and headed back to Hamble, dropping the Red Arrows liaison man at Lymington on the way. Returning to the RAF Yacht Club at about 13.00 both boats were recovered to their trailers in preparation for the journey back to Suffolk.
188 Squadron, in association with RAF Safety Section is actively promoting power boating as yet another adventurous activity for cadets which not only provides an exciting activity but through the associated training can teach many skills and disciplines that can be applied to the skills section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
Any Squadron interested in power boating can get in touch with 188 (Ipswich) Squadron on 01473 280548 or through the Squadron website using the online form. We are able to offer power boating experiences, to assist in approved exercises and through the RAFSA, Royal Yacht Association courses.
