Rugby
On a cold, wet sunday morning ten Ipswich cadets went to RAF Honnington to try out for the wing teams in hockey, rugby, football and netball. By the end of a long day two cadets had been chosen, Cdt Athina Morey for the senior girls netball and Cdt Tommaz White for the junior boys rugby, well done to you both.

Their next challenge is represent Norfolk & Suffolk Wing at RAF Cranwell against the other Wing teams from Central & East Region, but no matter what happens there, although I’m sure they will continue to do well and make the Regional teams, they have both been awarded a Wing Representative Blue for their efforts so far.

First flight of the day for Cadet Goodchild

The morning of the 17 January 2009 saw the first opportunity of the year for Ipswich Air Cadets to enjoy some gliding at MDP Wethersfield in Essex.  The morning started off looking a liitle moist and with the possibility that no flying would actually happen, but as if someone was looking down on us the rain stopped and the cloud disappeared leaving a sunny, but still cold day.  The three cadets from Ipswich Squadron were joined by cadets from Brentwood Squadron and the numerous Staff Cadets and Adult Instructors of the Gliding School, No. 614 VGS.

Corporal Coleman and Cadets Goodchild and Adams spent the day doing their GIC’s, which involves numerous launches in a winch launched glider to achieve a set standard to be awarded the relevant certificate for their achievement. Both Cpl Colemand and Cadet Goodchild achieved their GIC 3, which is the highest, with Cdt Adams achieving GIC 2, but this was only because of his age and will be able to complete his GIC 3 when he turns 15.

All in all it was a great days flying, but also a busy one because whilst you are not flying you are helping retrieve, launch and at the end of the day clean the gliders ready for the next cadet units to arrive.

You will find photo’s in the gallery and our next gliding day is on the 9 May 2009.

Presentation Evening 2008

On the 12 January 2009 Ipswich Squadron held the annual award presentation evening for 2008. Guest of honour was our new Wing Staff Officer Squadron Leader Deere RAFVR(T) who kindly agreed to present the certificates that the cadets have achieved throughout the year as well as the awards for 2008.  The evening started with the Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Coles RAFVR(T) addressing the cadets and the many parents that had come to hear and see what the children had been up to throughout the year and the Squadrons plans for 2009 and beyond.  Flight Lieutenant Coles RAFVR(T) mentioned the many achievements and awards gained by various cadets via the Air Training Corps and also about the successful adventure camps we had this year to RAF Brecon and to Snowdonia.  He then went on to mention that we hope to continue this success on in 2009 by going back to Scotland as we did in 2007 and are looking in to the possibility of head further a field in 2010 to an expedition in Spain.

As well as the presentations and speeches the Squadrons Civilian Committee held an auction and a raffle, which successfully raise over £250 for the Squadrons Welfare Fund.  This fund is to help pay for activities throughout the year as well as maintaining the various equipment, including the Squadrons aging minibus so that we can offer the cadets the many opportunities available to them as a member of 188 (IPSWICH) Squadron.

Here is looking forward to a fantastic year for the Squadron in 2009 and well done to all the award winners listed below.
