Start/Finish Line at Bury St Edmunds Event

Pink wigs and wacky costumes brought colour to Nowton Park as 3,500 women took part in the Bury St Edmunds Race For Life.  Women of all ages walked, jogged and ran the 5km course in two races to make the most of a sunny Sunday.

The morning race, which is in its eighth year, sold out within a month of opening as cancer sufferers, survivors and supporters did their bit to raise cash for Cancer Research UK.

The cadets were on hand for the first time at this event to help with setting up the course and preparing the finish line so that everyone that participated got some well deserved water and their medal.  The cadets have one more event to support this year, which takes place on the 8 July 2009 at Trinity Park.

The first Armed Forces Day was on the 27 June 2009, and brought an opportunity for the nation to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, and from veterans to recruits.

Across the country communities are holding local events, businesses are showing their support through promotional offers, and to kick off the proceedings, local authorities held flag-raising ceremonies at 1030 on 22 June.

188 (Ipswich) Squadron was happy to partake in one such event at a school in Whitton.  The event attend not only by ourselves, but local Sea Cadet and Army Cadet units was organised and presided over by the Rev. Andrew Dotchin from the parish and padre to the Squadron.  The event saw the cadets from all three services join in with the celebrations and activities with the pupils from the school to show there support and appreciation for those currently serving, veterans and the fallen.

The Squadron once again journey up in to Norfolk to take part in the Wings 6-A-Side football tournament.  In previous years the event was held in Norwich, but due to that facility closing down last year the event was moved to North Walsham and the pitches were grass instead of astro turf.

The 8 man & 1 girl team travelled up early in the morning to join the other squadrons of the Wing in what was going to be an eventful and rain free day.  The morning started with the team briefing and the picking of leagues for the first round of games which would then lead on to the quarter finals, semi finals and of course the grand final at the end of the day and the chance of 2 teams to battle it out for the overall champions.

The Squadron played 6 games in the first round and started of well with four 0-0 draws against some very strong opponents.  Unfortunately there was also two 1-0 defeats, which meant that after the final calculations to select the teams for the quarter finals we missed the cut.

All the cadets enjoyed the the day and just a few bump and bruises brought home to help tell the tale.  the squadron has in previously been very successful in the tournament including being overall champions 5 years ago and who knows maybe again next year.

Well done to all the teams for taking part and you’ll finds some photo’s of the day in the Gallery.

It was time for the Squadron to defend its title of 2008 for being the Wings Drill Team winners with the first set of of the competition being held at Ipswich against 6 other Squadron from the Suffolk area.

The competition is made up of two segments, the first being an inspection of the cadets uniform followed by the second segment of drill moves.  Every Squadron follows the same routine so that marking can be kept simple and fair to all those taking part.

The running order for the evening was as follows, but as you can imagine as it was being held at Ipswich the cadets had the honour of being first on and setting the standard for the other Squadrons to beat:

  1. 188 (Ipswich) Sqn
  2. 356 (Felixstowe) Sqn
  3. 301 (Bury St Edmunds) Sqn
  4. 863 (Thurston) Sqn
  5. 2470 (Sudbury) Sqn
  6. 1331 (Stowmarket) Sqn
  7. 1334 (Manningtree) Sqn

As well as the Competition the Civilian Committee of 188 (Ipswich) Squadron kindly laid on a BBQ for those cadets and staff who were partaking or had just come along to support their Squadron for the evening, which I’m sure for those Squadrons waiting to go on help to take away the tension.

The weather was also kind to us and the evening went smoothly keeping to its timings and all that is left to do now is wait for the results.  All the teams done very well and it will be a hard one for the judging staff to choose an overall winner this year, but fingers cross you never know we may get the to defend our title by getting through to the next round.

Race For Life 8 June 2009

Race for Life is a 5KM charity run held at various places all over Britain during the summer to raise money and awareness for Cancer Research UK, the money raised goes towards people with cancer, their families and new treatments.

188 (Ipswich) Squadron were on hand to set up the promotional paraphernalia, marshal the 2000 plus runners around the course set up in Chantry Park and help tidy up afterwards.  Although it’s safe to say the originally grass track had turned to mud by the end of the day (thanks to the almost continuous down pour) everyone enjoyed the event, particularly the amusing costumes some chose to run in.

The Squadron will also be helping out at the Race for Life event in Bury St Edmunds on the 28 June 2009 and will be helping out on the 8 July 2009 at Trinity Park Ipswich for the evening race.

You can find photo’s of this and future events as they happen in the gallery.
