In February, the Norfolk and Suffolk junior netball team returned to RAF Cranwell to defend our title.

Due to bad weather, there was a nervous start to the day, with the tournament nearly being called off.  But instead, it was just some very unhappy boys left sitting on the side lines watching us girls take part in our netball tournament.

We started with our team warm up; drills, running, stretching and getting to know a fairly new side.  Then it was time to start first match – unfortunately against the favourites -South and East Midlands.  This led to us being a very nervous side stepping onto the court.  However, with some good team work and quick goals this was soon overcome and eventually led us to a 7-2 victory.

Then after a seemingly quick break, we were back on court to face our rivals – Trent.  We no longer had nerves but fatigue this time and although this affected our play we battled on to win 5-3.

With our spirits high we won for the third time – 4-2 against Hearts and Bucks, another tough match, where our determination seemed once again vital.

For our next match we unfortunately made the mistake of thinking it would be easy (seeing as the other team had not won any other matches, unlike us) and were lucky to come away with a 1-1 draw.  This then dampened our spirits but after a good team talk from Hannah and Timmy (who finally got to use some techniques from rugby to get us excited), we were raring to go again for our final and, arguably, most important match.  This proved to be a tight contest with every interception and goal cheered on by all, even the begrudging boys on the side-line. Leading to us pulling ahead to go on to win 3-1 against Beds and Cambs and for the second year, retaining the title.

Two of the girls from this team were eventually chosen to play for the Regional Team so on top of the win, this proved to be a highly successful day for the netballers from Norfolk and Suffolk.

On the 28 of February 2010, the Norfolk and Suffolk Wing rugby team were to represent the Wing at RAF Brampton.  The coach left at 8:15 from Bury train station after making an earlier stop at Norwich Headquarters. We arrived to rain, wind and mud but that didn’t stop us from getting kitted up and out there.  We were first on against south east midlands and won the game and conceived no tries. The day progressed and every team we came against we beat with mild ease.  The weather was still as bad as earlier and the pitch was becoming slippery and boggy as the finals were approaching.  The final two teams were Norfolk and Suffolk Wing vs. Herts and Bucks.

This game proved the toughest and the scores were chasing each other dangerously, in the last minutes Norfolk and Suffolk pushed everything we had and pulled ahead by a few good tries and conversions. The match ended and we (Norfolk and Suffolk Wing) were awarded champion unofficially.  We got changed in amazing spirits and went to final parade; here we were officially crowed regional champions and won something for wing, that hasn’t happened in about a decade.  Overall it was an incredibly good day with results that staggered everyone.  Thanks to the staff who took us and the bus driver.

THOUSANDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE TO CELEBRATE

150TH ANNIVERSARY OF CADET MOVEMENT

The UK’s cadet movement is celebrating a century and a half of support to young people with hundreds of events all over the country throughout 2010, all designed to promote the movement and encourage people of all ages to get involved. The year of celebration is entitled Cadet150 and Her Majesty The Queen is Patron.

With origins dating back to 1860, the cadet movement is one of the oldest and most successful voluntary youth organisations in the world. A force to be reckoned with, today it numbers 131,000 young people led by 25,000 adult volunteers in well over 3,000 sites across the country.

Cadet150 honours the role the Cadet Forces play in assisting young people towards responsible adulthood through learning new skills and developing self-confidence, and recognises the contribution the young people themselves make to their local communities.

Central to the national commemorations will be a royal review of the Cadet Forces in central London in July 2010, but celebrations will be ongoing throughout the year, all reflecting the spirit of fun, excitement, adventure and community service at the heart of the cadet movement.

60 specially selected cadets will be embarking on a unique expedition to southern Africa during which they will work with orphans and vulnerable children in Lesotho, while dozens more will be challenging themselves on treks and expeditions all over the world, including one to Mount Everest. Back in the UK there will be competitions showcasing first aid and a wide array of sports, as well as a special residential camp for cadets participating in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.

To represent the lasting legacy of the cadet movement and its continued appeal to young people, cadets across the country will be planting 150,000 trees in partnership with the Woodland Trust. The national events will conclude with formal tributes during Remembrance weekend in November.

188 (Ipswich) Squadron Air Training Corps, ‘C’ Company Suffolk Army Cadet Force and TS Orwell Sea Cadets Corps have organised many events over the forthcoming months kicking off with a football match in March against a youth team from Ipswich Town Football Academy.  The football match will then be followed by a display from all three cadet forces at the Suffolk Show at the beginning of June, shortly followed by a Day in The Park with a Tri-Cadet Force its a knock out competition supported by sections of the regular armed forces bringing along static displays.

You can find more precise information on the events happening in Ipswich at the dedicated Cadet 150 Ipswich website www.cadet150ipswich.org.uk

ATC Sunday Parade

Posted by admin on Sunday 14 February 2010 under 2010 | Be the First to Comment

ATC Sunday is a compulsory parade to celebrate the founding of the Air Training Corps on 5th February 1941 and is subsequently held on the closest Sunday by cadets across Britain every year.  Ipswich is no exception and our parade took part on Sunday 14th February at Whitton church with the Squadron Padre, Revd. Andrew Dotchin.

The 40 strong cadets from the squadron was joined by not only the parishioners, but also the current Mayor of Ipswich.  As part of the service the Padre enrolled 5 junior cadets in to the Air Training Corps and the Squadron allowing them to now start enjoying the vast range of activities that the Squadron and Corps offer to its many thousand cadets.

After the service the cadets, joined by the Mayor enjoy a selection of cakes and biscuits and a much need hot cup of tea in the church hall before heading back to the Squadrons Headquarters for dismal.
